Humans: Damned or demanding?

I just did about 27 events in 60 days all over the country and I am having a low brain activity day (I literally cannot remember more than half the places I’ve been).  Speaking for a living is pretty weird. You just finished being entertaining articulate and intelligent for 1500 people for an hour and now on the airplane ride home you’ve accidentally locked yourself in the restroom.  I tried to act like being in the miniature facility (anything you do in there is pretty much a hook shot) of an express jet for 20 minutes is normal but nobody is buying it. I guess I just run out of mental steam from time to time. I think the more on you have to be the off you end up. In my business I have to be on every time because that’s what they are paying for. They booked 8 months in advance and have anticipated your success. So after my speech when I’m having lunch with the meeting planner and few people from the audience I hope they won’t mind if I forget how to effectively use a fork.  So the question is: Do we humans demand too much of ourselves?

I think it is not we who demand too much of ourselves, but others who expect too much from us. Especially those of us who speak or train for a living. If you are remotely funny at anytime, they will expect you to perform like a trained monkey everytime and without notice. It is hard when that is what they are paying for. Next time, take your credit card into the bathroom with you so you can let yourself out.
